MCCQE Part 1 Overview
The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part 1 is a one-day, computer-based examination that assesses critical medical knowledge and clinical decision-making at the level expected of a medical student completing their degree in Canada. Passing the MCCQE Part 1 is required to obtain the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) and is a prerequisite for entry into a Canadian residency program for international medical graduates.
Following the 2025 reform, the exam consists entirely of multiple-choice questions - the Clinical Decision-Making (CDM) component has been permanently removed. The exam is structured around two broad categories: Dimensions of Care (covering the spectrum of medical care) and Physician Activities (reflecting a physician's scope of practice). Eligibility & Requirements
- A medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) with Canada sponsor note.
- PhysiciansApply.ca account with source-verified medical degree and final transcripts (~CAD $335 setup).
- Application submitted up to 15 months before graduation; 12-month eligibility window from approval.
- Payment of MCC examination fees (~CAD $1,330 total inclusive of all assessment costs).
- For IMGs: also required to complete the NAC OSCE for residency eligibility.
